The rehabilitation of Embu Airstrip (ICAO: HKEM) is a strategic initiative by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) to transform a previously underutilized facility into a key aviation gateway for the Eastern region.

Xtreme Engineering’s involvement in the Embu Airstrip project focused on critical airside infrastructure and civil works necessary to upgrade the facility from a basic landing strip to a functional regional airport. The scope of work included the rehabilitation of the 990-meter asphalt runway, which had suffered from wear and drainage issues.

A primary technical challenge addressed was the implementation of a comprehensive airfield drainage network to protect the runway surface from water ingress, which is vital given Embu's highland terrain. Xtreme Engineering also managed the installation planning and civil preparation for Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL), ensuring the airstrip is future-proofed for 24-hour operations. These upgrades were accelerated in alignment with national events, such as the Madaraka Day celebrations hosted in Embu, to facilitate the transport of high-level dignitaries and security hardware.
