Athi River – Kyumvi (A8) Road Construction

Commonly known as the Machakos Turnoff Expansion, this road was a flagship project that fundamentally changed the logistics of the Nairobi–Mombasa highway.

Project Description

This engineering feat entailed the dualling of a 20-kilometer section of the A8 highway. To handle the immense axle loads of transit cargo, the roadbed utilized a 175mm cement-bound Graded Crushed Stone (GCS) base topped with heavy-duty bituminous layers. The project featured three massive grade-separated interchanges at Green Park, Daystar, and Mua Hills, which eliminated major traffic bottlenecks. Additionally, the Athi and Stony Athi river bridges were elevated to mitigate the risk of seasonal flooding.
